Professional Background

Professor Rahman graduated in 1972 from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He pursued higher studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UK), where he completed his M.Sc. in 1975 and Ph.D. in 1978. He began his professional career in the United Kingdom, joining the General Electric Co. in 1978 as a Systems Design Engineer. During this time, he contributed to the development of automation software for electrical drives used in steel and aluminum rolling mills. In 1980, he transitioned to academia, joining the National University of Singapore as a Lecturer. Later, in 1988, he joined the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia, where he served with distinction until his retirement in December 2020.

Contribution to Education and Teaching

Professor Rahman is internationally recognized for his pioneering research in electrical engineering and power electronics. Over his distinguished career, he has authored four books and 25 invited chapters in international publications, published more than 128 peer-reviewed journal articles, and presented over 400 conference papers. In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to new control techniques and compact machine designs using rare-earth permanent magnets for electric vehicles, he was elevated to Fellow of the IEEE in 2014. His research has had a remarkable global impact, with over 19,000 citations and an h-index of 61 on Google Scholar, reflecting his influence on the advancement of electrical engineering and power electronics worldwide.

Personal Interests

Outside of his professional career, Dr. Rahman has interests in reading, listening music, gardening and table tennis.
