Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam is currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, a position he assumed on 15 September 2024. Prior to this prestigious role, he served for 32 years as a faculty member in the Department of Physics at the University of Dhaka, where he also held the position of Department Chairman.
He completed both his Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master’s degrees in Physics from the University of Dhaka, graduating with first class results. Later, he earned his Doctor of Engineering degree from Toyama University, Japan under the prestigious Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarship.
Throughout his long academic career, Dr. Islam has made impactful contributions in teaching, research, and institutional development. His international academic engagements include postdoctoral research at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany under the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom under the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship, and the University of Twente in the Netherlands under the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship.
He has published more than 40 research articles in reputed national and international journals and actively participated in numerous seminars, conferences, professional meetings, and training programs both at home and abroad.
Dr. Islam has been honored with several prestigious international academic and research fellowships, including the Japanese Government (Monbusho) Scholarship, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship in Germany, the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship in the United Kingdom, and the Erasmus Mundus Fellowship in the Netherlands.
He has also been appointed as a Council Member and Trustee Board Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the world’s first and oldest international university network.
Dr. Islam is currently serving as the President of the University Teacher’s Association of Bangladesh (UTAB). He previously served in leadership roles within the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA), the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA), and multiple international alumni organizations.

Outside of his professional career, Mr. Islam has interests in listening to music, singing, and playing the violin.
